The state of the hunting industry in the Union Republics

The participants of the meeting listened with great interest to the speech of the head of the Department of Hunting at the Ministry of Agriculture of the Ukrainian SSR, V. V. Radchuk.

Most of Comrade's speech. Radchuk was dedicated to the organization and enrichment of hunting farms in the Ukrainian SSR. He noted the positive results of the unification of hunting and forestry in the republic. At the same time, the fight against poaching has significantly intensified, and a more numerous asset in the face of the forest guard successfully organizes and implements reproductive and biotechnological measures.

Comrade Eliseev believes that combining forestry and hunting farms is impractical, since foresters are busy fulfilling their immediate duties and cannot ensure the protection and reproduction of hunting fauna.

The head of the Department of Hunting and Reserves of the Main Forestry Department under the Council of Ministers of the BSSR, P. V. Borisenko, focused on the state of the hunting industry in Belarus. In particular, he stated that the presence of a number of valuable fur-bearing animals in the republic is noticeably increasing. Many beavers are exported from Belarus to other regions of the USSR. Successful deforestation is hindered, however, by continuous deforestation, which can be seen in the example of the Berezinsky Nature Reserve, where logging has reached a large size and this has led to an impoverishment of fauna.

Comrade Borisenko believes it is quite correct when hunting rifles and ammunition are sold only to those who have a hunting permit and have passed the hunting register.

Comrade Karanadze spoke about the great and positive changes that have taken place in Georgia since the unification of forestry and hunting farms. The protection of fauna was carried out not by individuals, but by numerous forest workers, who were also responsible for solving this task.

—In 1957,— said Comrade. Karanadze, — compared to previous years, the business of hunting in Georgia has improved markedly. Stocks of useful species of hunting animals have increased, and the fauna is more effectively protected.

For example, tours have noticeably multiplied and, according to the speaker, it is already possible to allow them to be shot under licenses.

B. G. Rahimov (Azerbaijan), describing the state of fauna in the republic, said that wintering waterfowl in the Caspian Sea are protected mainly by public inspectors and rangers. The fight against poaching has been intensified in the republic, and last year 414 violators of hunting rules and deadlines were punished. Mass explanatory work is underway among the population to preserve game. He agrees with Comrade's opinion. Malinovsky spoke about the need to expand the practice of assigning hunting grounds to collectives, which, of course, will increase the direct interest and responsibility of the mass of hunters in protecting wildlife and reproducing game.

The chief hunting Inspector of the Main Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Turkmen SSR, V. L. Shatkovsky, said that the long-term ban on shooting rare fauna representatives had a positive effect on increasing their numbers, but stocks of some species in the republic are decreasing. Nevertheless, it sounded strange in Comrade's speech. Shatkovsky reported that waterfowl hunting is allowed in the reservoirs of Turkmenistan from November 1 to March 1. This means that hunting is carried out at the bird's wintering grounds.

The report on the harvesting of furs and fur raw materials in the USSR was made by the Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Central Union, S. V. Potapov. He said that no country in the world has such rich opportunities for the development of fur harvesting, which are available in the Soviet Union.

There are over a hundred species of wild fur-bearing animals in our hunting fauna, in addition, five valuable species are bred in captivity. In terms of the variety and volume of fur products harvested, the quality and beauty of the hair, Soviet furs occupy the first place in world production and on the world market. In the post-war years, procurement costs for furs produced by hunting have been significantly increased. Large public funds are being allocated for advanced training of hunters and hunting management. State-owned and cooperative hunting and fur farms have been established.
